Silly or Amusing? -You Decide

I've been sick for the past few days.  I have just enough patience to be sick for one or two days, but then I'm ready to be done with it, already!  It's rare for me to get sick enough to miss three days of work; it's even more rare for me to actually wish I was at work rather than home.  How did this happen?  I'm thinking it has something to do with the fact that I failed to put the lime in the coconut...

Please forgive me- this just makes me laugh for some reason.  Too much cold medicine, perhaps?

Then, my son posted this on my wall, and I love it!

I find this highly entertaining, which probably goes to show that I'm not normal- not like that's a big shock to anyone.  Anyway, if you find this interesting, Vi Hart has more mathematical doodle games you might want to try.  Just follow the link.

Coincidentally, I'm a doodler.  There, I've admitted it.  For some reason, people seem to assume that "serious artists" don't doodle.  I'm not even going to address the "serious" part- but why wouldn't artists doodle?  I'm one of those people who, when thinking about something else, has to have something to do with their hands.  Who knows what they might do if not occupied?  I guess you could make an analogy to the basketball player who stands there absent-mindedly dribbling the ball while talking to someone.  So, sitting at a boring PD (Professional Development), I doodle.  Listening to a lecture in college, if not taking notes, I doodled.  If someone asked, I could just tell them I was exercising my drawing hand.  We have to stay in top condition, now, don't we?

Now, where was I going with this?  Oh. Yes; the video.  It was interesting, as I watched it, to notice that I've actually made doodles like some of the ones she demonstrates.  Who knew I was so mathematical?  Not me, that's for sure!

Here are a couple of my doodles, though not the kind she does on the video.  Those must be buried inside a box in the basement, in whatever I have left of my college notebooks; it would no doubt take years to dig them out!

In this one, I seem to be channeling the 60's...  (also, I didn't finish it)...

Sometimes, when I was substitute teaching, there wasn't really much for me to do except, well-  babysit.  I took to bringing my sketchbook and colored pencils, and my doodles might turn into something like this...

When I get a chance, I'm going to try some of Vi's doodle games- they look like fun!

  1. Your doodles are very mandala-like and quite developed it seems to me. The top one looks like a brain mandala in fact.

I hope that you're on the mend soon!

  2. feel better soon sweetie! I couldn't get the videos to run... but I am a huge fan of doodling...I think it helps a lot of people concentrate better to a lecture...strange as that may sound...some people need to move their hands in order to learn and retain information...I really believe that!

  3. So glad I popped over today-Silly AND Amusing. I could use an a tropical island with that lime and coconut. As for doodling-I think the brains of some people do not work unless the right brain is playing. Hope you feel 100% really soon. My word verification plaliv- Play live?

  4. These are some cool doodles....I am totally into doodles...I have a bunch that have to do with roosters...you don´t want to know the title on the folder of them:)
I have a friend from my college days that had to write EVERYTHING down as she would study...she just had piles of typing paper laying there and she´d write things, facts, doodles, etc. before a test
and she always had A´s....we bet her once that she would do just as well WITHOUT going to all the bother...nope ,,she got a B...she says she still does this:)

  5. Didn't get the video--maybe I need more lime in my coconut or something but I loved your doodles. I agree about the one looking like a brain. That's what I saw when I looked at it too. Feel better.

  6. Lime in the coconut? Clearly, you're either not getting enough vitamin C or enough alcohol! Fun tune to lift one's spirits (pardon the pun).

Your doodles are fabulous mini artworks. It's so true what you say about wanting to keep one's hands busy. Have you heard/seen a new (?) doodle "craze" called zen doodle or zentangle? Google will fill in the lines and dot the i's for you, if you're curious.

  8. Thanks, everyone! I'm feeling much better now.

Kim, you're right; my doodles almost always look like mandalas.

You're right, too, Laura; I won't go into all the boring special-ed. terminology, but there is a lot of educational theory and practice dealing with hand/arm movement in learning.

-teri- thanks for stopping by; I'm glad you were both amused and sillified? silliated? sillied?

Cynnie- I am also that person who wrote everything down in school- and got strait A's.

Teri- don't worry about not getting the video. There's really nothing to get, it's just a senseless song about being sick.

Lynne- I think it might be the alcohol- lol! I have seen the zentangles, and I like them. It seems kind of gimmicky (and ironic), though, that someone came up with a structured process for doodling so they could sell it as "meditation." Kind of like doing a study to find out that kids who don't exercise get fat, if you know what I mean.
