....scraping and painting the house (which isn't finished yet),
and this:
We also got a new roof, and all new windows on the house.
But despite the fact that many things still need to be done, and will for some time, we decided to go out to Shabo-Mekaw the last two weekends.
Luckily, everything there is fine, and looks as beautiful as ever.
We spent some time cutting and fitting oak boards, cut from our own downed trees, for the log cabin floor and upstairs walls.
One day, the dogs and I took quite a long hike, from one end of the island...
...to the other. The far end of the island was very overgrown, so I thought I'd come back up the other side of the creek, which proved to be probably just as difficult.
Some stuff we saw:

Have a wonderful weekend, everyone!
Sharmon, you are one busy woman! What a gorgeous place to spend time and explore at your "Two Cottage Escape Pad". It must be difficult to leave when the time draws near. Except that now you are coming home to newly reno-ed house. Lovely.
ReplyDelete...is this the lumber from the trees from your back yard that you have now fitted in your cabin? Love the look of it. you guys are so hardworking and talented!! A beautiful life.
Gwen, I think you probably know what it's like to be this busy, from what I gather. It is indeed hard to leave our place in the country, but knowing I can go back there any time is comforting. The oak that we're using on the cabin floor is from trees that came down in a storm out at Shabo-Mekaw. We did have the ash trees from our yard cut into lumber, and will be using some of that later.
Deletesharmon, thank you for sharing the beauty!
ReplyDeletexoxo
It seems we both sharing the beauty lately, Lynne; you are so very welcome! xoxo
DeleteThat is the most beautiful little log cabin. I enjoyed the walk, thank you Sharmon!
ReplyDeleteThanks for coming along, Robyn! xo
DeleteSo wise to take the time to get away while in the middle of so many jobs. What a lovely balance. And what a beautiful get away! Thanks for thinking of us while on your walk and taking all those wonderful pics!
ReplyDeleteWell, all work and no play... The jobs will always be there, you know? I'm glad you enjoyed the photos, Carole!
DeleteYou seem busy, tis the season and will feel so good to have the house painted, i imagine.
ReplyDeleteplus your little log cabin is wonderful. I live in a tiny log cabin .
Loved seeing those little pretty orchids and red newt! wow. Lovely to meet you through our blogs and your message on mine.
It's great to meet you. Tammie Lee. You're right, it will be good to have the house painting finished - by the end of summer, we hope. We do love our place out in the country, though. Thanks for the kind words about my photos; I feel honored, coming from such a talented and accomplished photographer.
DeleteI saw the pic of your cabin on your blog; it is beautiful. This is the third cabin we;ve built, using logs from old pioneer log houses. We are both in love with Montana, ever since we visited Glacier Park, so your photos make my heart sing!
It looks like a perfect place to spend time, to relaxe and dream. Thanks for sharing these wonderful pictures with all of us.
ReplyDeleteGaby xo
You're so welcome, Gaby; I'm glad you enjoyed them! xo
DeleteGlad to see dwarf iris again, and you were fortunate to find the
ReplyDeletemountain magnolia in bloom. I'm hoping that the cardinal flowers
(red lobelia) that once grew on the island have survived the floods.
They were the most spectacular when flowers appeared late
summer/early fall.
Ken, the cardinal flowers are still there, at least as of last summer. glad you like the photos!
Deletewhat an awesome retreat, this place must renew your spirit...
ReplyDeleteYou're right, Cat, it really does; I'm so grateful to have it...
DeleteThis is so cool that you can do all this work yourself...between the roof and the cabin and the floor ,,,whew...I admire you. That cabin is a true sanctuary.
ReplyDeleteSometimes I kind of wish we couldn't do it all ourselves - it's so tempting (but far too expensive) to hire someone :) Because it is such a true sanctuary, it's worth it. Thanks for stopping by!
DeleteYour retreat is in such a beautiful area ... a walk amongst the trees and water is a true renewal. I feel good just viewing these perfectly untouched woods and your cabin invites relaxation. I can just imagine waking up to the sunshine and standing on the porch with a cup of coffee ... pure delight!
ReplyDeleteIt is beautiful there, Mary Ann, and still relatively untouched. I wish you could stand on the porch and have a cup of coffee with me. Thanks for visiting!
ReplyDeleteis that magical red beast a salamander?
ReplyDeleteIt is, Mo; in fact, it's called a red salamander, as luck would have it! Aren't they incredible-looking?
DeleteSo beautiful..such a deeply serene and pure place...gorgeous photos ..thanks for taking me on a beautiful journey! That sweet creature caught my heart!
ReplyDeleteThanks for your kind visit and very lovely words!
Victoria
Thanks for visiting, Victoria. I'm so glad you enjoyed my little piece of paradise!
DeleteSo, my parents owned this property and sold it to you. I have spent a lot of time there and you have captured its essence with your words and pictures. I am seeing your blog posts about it for the first time today, and am struck with a mixture of happy and sad. Sad, to not have had the maturity to appreciate it in my youth, but happy for the memories it gave me. Hemlocks, moss, cliffs, that beautiful creek, etc. My wife to be visited me in Lexington from San Diego in October of '97 and we spent the night up there and she still talks about it. You have done wonderful things with it, and I'm so happy it is in the hands of someone who really gets it! Thanks so much for sharing this with us. Truly Special!
ReplyDeleteBob, I'm so glad you found my blog! You can rest assured that my husband and I are doing our best to preserve Shabo-Mekaw and all its beauty. It is very special to us, and I'm happy that you have good memories of your time here. thank you so much for getting in touch through my blog, and please don't hesitate to let me know if if you ever want to come out and visit.
