Happy Always

The Journey
by Mary Oliver

One day you finally knew
what you had to do, and began,
though the voices around you
kept shouting
their bad advice-
though the whole house
began to tremble
and you felt the old tug
at your ankles.
"Mend my life!"
each voice cried.
But you didn't stop.
You knew what you had to do,
though the wind pried
with its stiff fingers
at the very foundations, though their melancholy
was terrible.
It was already late
enough, and a wild night,
and the road full of fallen branches and stones.
but little by little,
as you left their voices behind,
the stars began to burn
through the sheets of clouds,
and there was a new voice
which you slowly
recognized as your own,
that kept you company
as you strode deeper and deeper
into the world,
determined to do
the only thing you could do-
determined to save
the only life you could save.

Wishing each of you a very, very happy always
as you stride deeper and deeper into the world.

  5. try again ...
there’s a beautiful post by Lynda Merry over on her iWonder blog

    Love this-

“The past few years, I’ve come to the end of the year saying “enough already!” My personal wish for 2014 is that it’s a year so good I won’t want to see it end. Not a resolution – more of an intention…

Wishing you a 2014 too good to limit to just 12 months…”

isn’t that the best thought?
Oh and walking is my favourite meditation, love how things come in from left field out of the corner of the eye as well as the odd crow feather or the amazing upside down world seen in a dewdrop...

Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts with me. I'm happy to reply here, but may not always have time for individual emails.
