Out in the Country

Yesterday we were out at Shabo-Mekaw, sanding and staining. I did get some time to go walking about by the creek, however, so I thought I'd share a few bits of what I saw. By the way, if you're not familiar with our beautiful country get-away, you can find out more by going here and following the links at the bottom of the post.

The two cabins - one we renovated, one (the log cabin) we built from scratch.

 Little orange funnel-shaped mushrooms...

 Heal-All

Horse Nettle

 Smooth phlox

I have no idea what this; I can't find it in any of my tree or flower books. It's a very large bush or shrub. If you can identify it, please let me know!

To my great surprise, I found this rhododendron down by the creek, hidden by some rocks near the bank. I don't know how I missed seeing it all these years.

As always, though always changing, the Kinniconick.

And of course, wherever I go, there they are - my boys, Arlo and Sunny.

  1. This is such a nice place that you can be in tune with nature. I like your log cabin both the renovated and the newly built. The mushrooms are new to me, look so unique. Excuse me if I am wrong, but I think the lace like flowers you asked is one kind of species of hydrangea because they resemble “Hydrangea hirta” native to Japan, though ours is much smaller. They grow into large bush and like dappled shade. Thank you for your visit. Say hello to Arlo and Sunny.

  2. The white clusters of flowers could be elderberry...Do they have a delicious scent? I would make sure (as there are similar bushes which could be poisonous)and then make pancakes with them!

  3. What a fabulous place! I agree that the flower may be a variety of hydrangea - google images.

  4. I was thinking Queen Anne's Lace but the foliage doesn't fit. Thrilled to see the big leaf laurel blooming at Shabo Mekaw....never saw one there but several grew along Pine Eddy years ago. As always, love your photography.

    1. Thanks, Ken! No, it's definitely not Queen Anne's Lace. This bush is VERY large and quite a bit taller than me, and I can't find it anywhere in my books. The flowers are beautiful, though.

  6. Elderflower, Sharmon. So many things you can make but the best is champagne or cordial . . . or fritters :-D

    1. Yes, I thought they were interesting. It's a moist environment out there in the foothills of the Appalachians, and all kinds of really strange mushrooms grow there. I'm going to have to start photographing and identifying them, there are so many!

  8. I agree that the large bush with lovely sprays of flowers is an elderberry bush. There are a number of kinds. People make things with the flowers and later the berries when ripe.

I love those little orange mushrooms. I tried to look them up, but did not find them. I use FB groups to ID mushrooms and flowers. The folks are so helpful!

So nice that you got to go out to your land/cabins. The first time i met you I think was a cabin post.

    1. Elderberry. I've heard of it, but always thought it was more of a tree. Thanks for the information, Tammie. What facebook groups do you use for plant identification? I'm always trying to look stuff up, and can't always find them in my books.
You're right, we did meet by talking about our cabins; yours is so lovely it caught my attention right away! xoxo

  9. I have stumbled onto your blog, Shabo-Mekaw looks like paradise. I wanted to ask if you still own and if you have ever considered sharing it as a vacation rental? We live near in Russell, KY....cheers to you and your little slice of heaven :)

  10. Unknown, we do still own it, but have no plans to rent it out at this time. Someday, maybe!
