Technological Problem???

You may or may not have noticed my recent absence from the blogosphere, but I have been offline for several days.  My computer could not connect to the internet; it advised me that "A network cable is disconnected."  I did everything I could think of, including unplugging and re-plugging all the cables more than once, but ultimately had to call the internet provider, who informed me that they could send someone out on Monday.  Well, what could I do but wait (very impatiently) until Monday, which has now arrived.  So a little while ago, the Zoomtown guy came in and messed with some things, trying to determine the cause of the malfunction.  I thought for sure it was the fault of my computer, likely requiring some time-consuming and costly repair.

But, no.  A screw had come out, causing the little card that allows my computer to cozy up with Zoomtown  to come loose.  A SCREW?!!!  I couldn't believe it- me, a woman who has actually built log houses, foiled by something so incredibly low-tech!

Of course, strictly speaking, a screw is technology.  In fact, it's physics.  I swear, I'm not kidding!  It's one of the six simple machines of basic physics.  According to Wikipedia:
A screw is one of the six simple machines. All screws are helical inclined planes. A screw can convert a rotational force (torque) to a linear force and vice versa. The ratio of threading determines the mechanical advantage of the machine. More threading increases the mechanical advantage.

The etymology of the word is also kind of interesting:
Middle French escroue (nut, socket) (Modern French ecroue, from Latin scrofa (sow), referring to the screw-like tip of a boar's penis.  (Wiktionary)

Couldn't have lived without knowing that, huh?

More Business of Art Business

Here are some examples of business card designs, or just backgrounds, that I've considered and discarded.

Thanks to my good friends Dona Iona Drozda and Kathleen Krucoff, along with important info from R. Garriott, I have once again changed my mind about the business card thing. And no, I'm not being sarcastic; this is a good thing.

Dona and Kathleen gave me wonderful advice, including that I should check out R. Garriott's post about having business cards printed (link above), and the VERY convincing reasons not to do them yourself. Two reasons in particular stood out in my mind: 1)frustration due to poor print quality, images not lining up with the cards, and PAPER JAMS, and 2)it actually costs more to print them yourself. The cost thing is self-explanatory, but frustration due to technological problems drives me CRAZY! Here is the expression on my face when I have computer problems of any kind:

Obviously, this is not my face; it's a picture of my son Colin's girlfriend from a really funny "emotions-of-the-day" refrigerator magnet they made (sorry, Lindsey!).

So, I'm off to do a different design, and have it printed.

Quite Peculiar

Well, I don't know if the computer gods just hate me or what. The virus my computer had before was apparently hiding somewhere and moving around and it came back with a vengence. I had to take it to professionals, who told me that 80% of their business was a result of this particular virus. They had to wipe the hard drive down to factory specs, then all the programs had to be reinstalled, etc., etc., etc. All this took about 2 weeks.

Then, what's even more bizarre, to add insult to injury, I could not get into my blogger account! When I tried to sign in, I got the message that my username is invalid. I got a gmail account recently, and this account is under my other email address. If I sign in using my gmail account, it says I have no blogs; if I try to sign in using my other one, it's invalid. Somehow I was able to get in using a different search engine, but have no idea if this will work in the future. This very well may be my last post! If anyone has ever had this problem, PLEASE let me know what to do.

The photo included in this post was taken by my son, Colin Reusch (it's his own eyeball), and digitally manipulated by me.
Anyway, as John Lennon would say, "Quite peculiar, mama!"
